Do you know that feeling when somebody gives you a gift out of the blue, or offers to do something for you which just makes life a little easier – perhaps you’re at the parking ticket machine and realise you don’t have the right cash, and somebody buys your ticket. A small act of kindness like this restores your faith in mankind and also makes you more inclined to do something for somebody else.
As a communications expert working with charities, under the moniker Well Read PR, I’m interested in the psychology of giving and also in finding out which charities and causes are close to people’s hearts across Chesterfield / Nottingham / Sheffield. I am therefore launching a ‘giving’ campaign which builds on the notion of ‘one good turn deserves another’, as well as which passes on my love of literature and books.
I will be displaying fictional books which I have acquired over the years in and around venues in Chesterfield, Nottingham and Sheffield. Passers-by will be invited to take the book and keep it in exchange for making a donation, of any size, to the charity of their choice and then tweeting the name of their chosen charity using the #onegoodturn hashtag and copying in @katewellreadpr.
Each book will have a sticker on it carrying the #onegoodturn hashtag (also a play on the term ‘page-turner’) as well as links to my website explaining the purpose of the campaign. There will also be a small heart-shaped slate placed (or hung) near the book which will invite people to take the books – “Please take me”, “Read me now”, “I’m yours”….as well as website address, hashtag etc.
Listed below are all the charities that people have donated to during this campaign. A big thanks to those who have taken part.
